Join us this Friday at Maggiano's, when our GRSP student - Julia Carlotto Biral - from Brazil shares the story of her year here in Dunwoody! Julia is hosted this year by Ardy, Lydie and Chloe Bastien, and is studying psychology at Oglethorpe University - and we hope she'll continue to be part of our lives as she continues those studies over the next few years.
At our holiday luncheon, Julia was awarded one of two Barbara M. and Donald L. Thomas Peace Awards by the Rotary Club of Roswell, an award that recognizes GRSP students committed to working toward peace. Julia was recognized as a "natural-born leader." The committee was moved by her ability to foster deep relationships with her peers and promote peace through her everyday interactions. "Julia takes charge without imposing," committee chair John Carruth noted. "She gives us a glimpse of a young woman who promotes peace naturally." The award will assist Julia with the financial challenges of being an international student, helping to cover educational expenses and improve her housing situation so she can focus on her studies and emotional health.
When asked about GRSP at the start of the year, Julia said, "Participating in GRSP goes far beyond financial support. It’s a chance to be part of a tradition that, for over 70 years, has promoted inclusion, exchange, connection, and care. Being in another country, far from my family, can be challenging, but knowing I’ll have a host family and a support network is truly comforting. Sharing experiences with people my age and learning from those who open their homes to us makes everything more meaningful."
