District 6900 News for October, 2022

From Our District Governor

Imagine What We Can Accomplish Together

By George Granade

It is a pleasure to be your District Governor this Rotary year. As I continue to travel around the district visiting clubs and attending social, we are having a good time. It is great hearing about all the wonderful work you are doing in your community as well as around the world. We have completed the first quarter of year with the seeds of our planning in the ground and beginning to flourish. We are beginning to focus on the fun and celebration of the fruits of our harvest we will have at District Conference in April.

October 24 is World Polio Day - a time to raise awareness about the global efforts to end polio for good. I hope you are planning to host an event or activity in your community. Are you planning a fundraiser to generate money to donate to Polio Plus? Are you using your social media to spread the word about the World Polio Day? Be sure you register your club’s participation for World Polio Day by October 13 to receive access to Rotary’s Global Update one week before World Polio Day. You can find materials to support your polio event online too. We are too close to eradicating polio not to finish the drill.

On a similar note, I hope you will join us in Warm Springs, Georgia on Saturday, October 22, for the long-awaited celebration of the museum at the historic outdoor pool - which chronicles the fight against Polio and honors PDG Ann Henderson Johnson. PDG Steve Stanfield has been hard at work on this initiative for several years - and many clubs have contributed to the work we have done at Warm Springs. You can read all about this special event below; please take time to register.

As we continue to cultivate our goals, we are focused on several key crops ... membership, Foundation giving, Club recognition and investing in/planning for the future. [more]

Long-Awaited Dedication of Museum at Historic Outdoor Pool at Warm Springs, Georgia - October 22, 2022

By Steve Stanfield

The long-awaited celebration of the museum at the historic outdoor pool at Warm Springs, Georgia - dedicated to the memory of Ann Henderson Johnson, our first female District Governor (1998-99) - will take place on Saturday, October 22 from 10 am - 2 pm. The museum not only tells the story of Warm Springs and Polio treatment, but it also tells the story of the quest to eradicate Polio from the face of the earth.

Many Rotarians and Rotary Clubs donated to the refurbishing of the museum and to the Adopt a Cottage Program - all in the name of PDG Ann. This celebration will be a special day for all of us - and includes a complimentary catered luncheon. District Governor George Granade and I want to see you there; we need to have you register on the district website by October 14 (just follow this link to get there) so that we can let the caterer know how many people will attend.

In the meantime, read more of this amazing story. [more]

As you know, TRF uses Grants as their vehicle to “Do Good in the World”.  And now is the time to take best advantage of the opportunities your Club might want to use. Just imagine the Scholarship and Global Grant opportunities. [more]

GRSP and Rotary Working Together

Promoting Peace Through Understanding

By Ian Bond

The Rotary Club of Columbus has been very involved in Hispanic Heritage Month. We have some young and energetic Latin members in our club, who along with GRSP alumnus Sebastian Villa (Colombia, Class of 2016-17), presented an excellent program at our club, brought a Panamanian dancer to one of our meetings and got many of our members involved in the big Hispanic Heritage Festival at the weekend.

Sebastian also contacted several Rotary Clubs through our Central and South America, as well as our own Atlanta-Brasil RC to put together a video celebrating Rotary in Latin America and the Rotary Club of Columbus’s participation in Hispanic Heritage. You can view the video on YouTube. [more]
